Beech top
Beech is the most common of table tops. A compromise between light and dark. Not always in fashion, but still OK 5 years from now.

Cherry top
Cherry is a classic and to many people it means the serious and conservative choice. The dark/redish glow appears after the table has been exposed to the sun for a while.

Maple top
Maple makes a light surface. Another light sort could be for example birch. Most people cannot tell the difference.

Oak top
Oak is neither light nor dark. The relatively large colour differencies in the year rings of the tree make it sort of in between. A fashionable and somewhat sofisticated surface.
